Student Matinee Class Warm-Up

In order to meet demands of the new Common Core Standards, Ballet Arizona and Grand Canyon University’s Dance Education Program have partnered in bringing a 45 minute arts integration lesson, free of cost, to your school.  Through a fun and engaging movement-based lesson, teacher candidates from GCU and Ballet Arizona staff will help prepare your students for the upcoming Student Matinee Performance. Teachers! If you are interested in utilizing more arts learning strategies in your classrooms to improve your students’ academic performance, this is an event you won’t want to miss! Administrators! We will lead as many as 3 consecutive lessons per school site, in order to reach more students.

When you reserve tickets to see the following Ballet Arizona productions, you will be invited to participate in this event.  Your lesson’s theme, aligned to the Common Core Standards, will relate to one of the following story ballets:

Cinderella – (October 31, 2013) – Language Arts
The Nutcracker – (December 12, 2013) – Math
La Bayadère – (February 13, 2013 ) – Science

The following is an outline of the in-class presentation, designed for groups of up to 35 students:


I.  Introduction

-Basic facts about Classical Ballet: Story, Music, History, Terminology, Careers, Dance Elements (See Study Guide provided for more information.)
-Show and Tell with Tutus and Pointe Shoes.

II.  Arts Integration Lesson

-Whole Group Instruction: Exploring concepts through warm-up and modeling by GCU Teacher Candidates.
-Cooperative Learning Activity:  Delving deeper in small Groups of 5 students maximum.
-Creative closure activity to bring the lesson home and spur further thoughts on how this experience connects to the curriculum in language arts, math, or science.
