Summary/Objective:
The Director of Production oversees and ensures the successful operation of the Production Department. This includes oversight and maintenance of the physical quality of each Ballet production and presentation, budgeting, payroll, financial management of all production departments, production maintenance and construction, and management of stage and production personnel. Most importantly, the Director of Production is responsible for overseeing the successful execution of the Artistic Director’s vision.

- Develop high level implementation plan to achieve artistic vision.
- Identify infrastructure requirements (including sets, wardrobe, venues, etc.) necessary for plan implementation.
- Manage Production department and oversee Costume Shop administration.
- Prepare detailed annual Production Department and Performance budgets, manages those budgets, maintain a system of checks and balances between the Production Department accounts and the Finance Department budgets, and provide monthly updates and projections for review by the Director of Operations.
- Determine the yearly budgetary needs for the Costume Shop. Oversee, track, and reconcile Costume Director’s expenditures.
- Accountable for the implementation, execution, and outcomes of the Production Budget.
- Negotiate and contract all set, costume, lighting, projection designers, and costume construction houses.
- Negotiate and issue contracts for rental of the company’s sets and costumes.
- Maintain the company’s warehouse(s) and ensures the safety of stored items.
- Secure all applicable rights, licensing, and royalties.
- Provide oversight and has final authority of the construction build of all scenic elements and costumes for new works.
- Oversee the technical and stage management aspect of all load in/out, rehearsals and performances, and manage all of the Ballet’s production materials and production/costume personnel.
- Oversee the stage machinery at Symphony Hall and the Orpheum Theatre, and maintain a relationship with Symphony Hall, the Orpheum Theatre, and the City of Phoenix, who manages the equipment and systems at Symphony Hall and the Orpheum Theatre.
- Oversee creation and maintenance of all technical drawings and documents. Oversee creations and maintenance of repertory database, files, audio-visual materials, and production bibles.
- Oversee the creation of the annual Production Calendar, incorporating dancer, orchestra, and stage personnel schedules around prevailing union rules.
- Organize and lead all Production/Artistic meetings to ensure efficient use of stage/theater time.
- Provide complete and accurate payroll information for stage and shop personnel to the Human Resource Manager. Review and approve applicable timesheets bi-weekly for all part-time and contracted labor for the Production and Costume departments.
- Act as the primary liaison with IATSE representatives for CBA implementation, compliance, and administration. Participates in negotiation of labor contracts for Local 335.
- Coordinate with Philanthropy, Community Engagement, and Marketing Departments and provide support for special events, facilities, and programming.
- Fully participate in Board, Leadership Team, and Full Staff Meetings, supporting colleagues by offering information and assisting with appropriate projects and initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Must demonstrate exceptional organizational skills in managing all technical production elements and personnel for Ballet Arizona performances and rehearsals, and diligently maintains the highest possible production values for BAZ performances.
- Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Must possess a high level of digital literacy, be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, and be comfortable working with databases.
- Must possess strong project management skills including planning, organizing, prioritizing, implementing, and evaluating.

Supervisory responsibilities:
- This position directly manages the Technical Director & Building Maintenance Engineer, Stage Manager, and Costume Director.
- This role must also supervise stage management, lighting, stage crew, and wardrobe staff during production runs at the theatre or other performance venues.
Work environment:
- Cyclical physical and scheduling demands, depending upon the season.
- Evening and weekend work required during the Ballet performance season.
Physical demands:
- Significant physical effort is required – must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders
- Must be able to twist, turn, bend, and reach and work overhead
- Must be able to push and pull heavy objects
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to common chemicals
Travel required:
- Travel to and from external event sites (within Maricopa County) is required.
- Must be willing and able to commute to and from the office and event/performance sites on a regular basis.
- Travel may be required for occasional domestic and international touring engagements.
Required education and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on Technical Theatre or Production or equivalent professional experience
- At least 3-5 years of related experience with a major arts organization
- Demonstrated experience tracking expenditures and managing budgets over $1M
- Familiarity with stage lighting, audio, rigging and video equipment and systems.
Preferred education and experience:
- Proficiency in Spanish desirable
- Experience managing professional stage crews and union houses preferred
- Familiarity with CAD and other drafting software preferred.
