Jim Smith

Community Volunteer

After graduating from the University of Alabama, Jim and his wife Joyce toured the US for a summer and settled in San Francisco where they lived for 33 years, enjoying the city life and the cultural amenities of the opera and symphony.  He also developed a keen interest in choral music and ballet, and served on the board of Volti, a professional chorus.  In his work life, Jim developed computer systems for the State of California and for Levi Strauss & Co.  After retirement they moved to Sonoma, just north of San Francisco.  Over the next 10 years he was a partner in Sonoma productions of an opera, a recital, and a few ragtime festivals.  After dividing their time between Sonoma and Scottsdale for many of those years they moved to the Phoenix area full time in 2016.  He is ecstatic to be a part of, and to support the art and artists, of Ballet Arizona.  He also enjoys playing French horn in a valley community band, a woodwind quintet, and in a bassoon – French horn duo.
