James Payne

School Director

James Payne began his training in Phoenix, Arizona with Michel Fokine’s great niece Nina Marlow. His performing career with Ballet West (1989-1994) and Houston Ballet (1994-2001) gave him the opportunity to perform internationally, working with exceptional choreographers and coaches. He has over 35 years of professional experience in the art of ballet.

Excelling at both classical and contemporary work allowed him to perform soloist and principal roles in all the classics as well as work by Ben Stevenson, Christopher Bruce, Ronald Hynd, George Balanchine, Val Caniparoli, Glen Tetley, William Forsythe, John Neumeier, Eugene Loring, Helgi Tomasson, Peter Martins, Jiri Kylian, Trey McIntyre, and more.

Upon his retirement from the stage, he served as Houston Ballet’s company manager and then co-founded and directed a student performing company and school for 17 years in the Woodlands, Texas. Jim has choreographed and produced 5 full length ballets and many one act ballets. He has served as Philadelphia Ballet's School Director, Houston Ballet Academy faculty, and sat on the board of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA). Jim continues to serve as a Master Teacher and judge for YAGP and repetiteur for Trey McIntyre, staging his ballets internationally.

Camila has designed and implemented ballet classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, emphasizing technique, musicality, and artistry.

Joined Ballet Arizona: 2019

Originally from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Gillmer Duran began dancing Venezuelan folk dances and continued his formal ballet training at age 21 at the Fundación Arte Nuevo. He danced professionally with Ballet Metropolitano, Ballet Nuevo Mundo, National Ballet of Caracas, Tulsa Ballet Theatre, and eight consecutive seasons with Eugene Ballet Company. He worked with choreographers such as Vicente Nebrada, Nicolo Fonte, Robert Battle, Mauricio Wainrott, Edwaard Liang, Jessica Lang and Toni Pimble, among others.

His versatility and intuition allowed him to perform a variety of classical, neoclassical and contemporary roles. In June of 2010, he began teaching ballet as a way to inspire the new generations of dancers and to share his passion for dance. In October of 2010, he was appointed as Alaska Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer. In 2011, Duran received the Fermin Toro University Award for his career and continued to teach ballet in the east coast. He has taught master classes for several schools and has created choreography for Eugene Ballet, Alaska Dance Theatre, Ballet Des Moines, and Northwest Arkansas Ballet Theatre.

In July of 2023 he obtained his Bachelor in Fine Arts from Saint Mary’s College of California. He is currently a full-time faculty at the School of Ballet Arizona and this is his fifth-year teaching at the Arizona School for the Arts.

Luis Martinez

Joined Ballet Arizona: 2022

Two years into architecture school in his native Monterrey, Mexico, Luis transferred to the Superior School of Music and Dance of Monterrey to pursue his true love, ballet. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Dance. He trained under Roberto Machado and Rosario Murillo and furthered his studies at the Córdoba Dance Festival with distinguished teachers including Vladimir Malakhov, Tadeusz Matacz, Claudio Muñoz, and Adria Velasquez. He also completed specialized intensives in Character Dance with Rafael Ibatullin and Horton Technique with Victor Talledos.

Upon graduating in 2010, Martinez joined Ballet de Monterrey (BdM) under the direction of Luis Serrano. He has danced Giselle, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, La Bayadere, and Graduation Ball. He also performed in major productions such as Luis Serrano’s Celebration, Sinergia, Cantus, Jorge Amarante’s Uma Batida DiferenteZendas, and Clark Tippet’s Brunch Violin Concerto. In 2014, with Amarante at the helm of BdM, Luis performed in Raymonda, Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, Amarante’s México en el Ombligo de la LunaCarmen and Cinderella. He was also chosen by Patrick Delcroix as the first cast in Mexico of Jirí Kylián’s Sechs Tanze. In 2016, under BdM’s new director Jose Manuel Carreño, Luis played Dr. Coppelius and Franz’s friends in Coppelia. In 2017, he danced in Alberto Mendez’s The Phantom of the Opera and also Luis Serrano’s Huapango. Luis was coached by renowned Ballet Masters and Mistresses Ileana Lopez, Phillip Balmain Beamish, Galina Alvarez, Analia Sosa Guerrero, Lazaro Carreño, and many more.

Drawing inspiration from his own teachers, Luis has worked as a ballet instructor while at BdM, and after eight seasons at BdM, Luis started a teaching career in earnest. In 2017, Luis and Serafín Castro founded and directed SL-Dancenter in Mexico. In 2019, Luis moved to Phoenix Metro Area, where he’s now a sought-after instructor and choreographer. He has served as director of the Ballet Program for many different dance studios in the Valley. In 2020, he choreographed and danced a duet with Serafín Castro with the Downtown Chamber Series. In 2021, he won the Outstanding Teacher Award at YAGP. With Luis as coach and choreographer, three of his students made the final round at the YAGP Finals in Tampa, Florida. Under his mentorship, dancers have earned scholarships and acceptances to leading institutions including the Royal Ballet School, John Cranko School, Dutch National Ballet Academy, Princess Grace Academy, Alvin Ailey, the School of American Ballet, a testament to the caliber of instruction and mentorship they receive. In 2022, Luis performed in Lauren Flower’s Fragments, a dance film commissioned by Phoenix Art Museum. He has been invited to guest teach for Ballet of Monterrey, Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Ballet22.

Martinez has been on faculty with Ballet Arizona since 2022 and joined as a Principal Faculty in 2025, teaching company members, and students of the School of Ballet Arizona. Known for his passion and high standards, he inspires dancers to pursue both technical excellence and authentic artistry.

He also completed specialized intensives in Character Dance with Rafael Ibatullin and Horton Technique with Victor Talledos.

Upon graduating in 2010, Martinez joined Ballet de Monterrey (BdM) under the direction of Luis Serrano. He has danced Giselle, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, La Bayadere, and Graduation Ball. He also performed in major productions such as Luis Serrano’s Celebration, Sinergia, Cantus, Jorge Amarante’s Uma Batida DiferenteZendas, and Clark Tippet’s Brunch Violin Concerto. In 2014, with Amarante at the helm of BdM, Luis performed in Raymonda, Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, Amarante’s México en el Ombligo de la LunaCarmen and Cinderella. He was also chosen by Patrick Delcroix as the first cast in Mexico of Jirí Kylián’s Sechs Tanze. In 2016, under BdM’s new director Jose Manuel Carreño, Luis played Dr. Coppelius and Franz’s friends in Coppelia. In 2017, he danced in Alberto Mendez’s The Phantom of the Opera and also Luis Serrano’s Huapango. Luis was coached by renowned Ballet Masters and Mistresses Ileana Lopez, Phillip Balmain Beamish, Galina Alvarez, Analia Sosa Guerrero, Lazaro Carreño, and many more.

Drawing inspiration from his own teachers, Luis has worked as a ballet instructor while at BdM, and after eight seasons at BdM, Luis started a teaching career in earnest. In 2017, Luis and Serafín Castro founded and directed SL-Dancenter in Mexico. In 2019, Luis moved to Phoenix Metro Area, where he’s now a sought-after instructor and choreographer. He has served as director of the Ballet Program for many different dance studios in the Valley. In 2020, he choreographed and danced a duet with Serafín Castro with the Downtown Chamber Series. In 2021, he won the Outstanding Teacher Award at YAGP. With Luis as coach and choreographer, three of his students made the final round at the YAGP Finals in Tampa, Florida. Under his mentorship, dancers have earned scholarships and acceptances to leading institutions including the Royal Ballet School, John Cranko School, Dutch National Ballet Academy, Princess Grace Academy, Alvin Ailey, the School of American Ballet, a testament to the caliber of instruction and mentorship they receive. In 2022, Luis performed in Lauren Flower’s Fragments, a dance film commissioned by Phoenix Art Museum. He has been invited to guest teach for Ballet of Monterrey, Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Ballet22.

Martinez has been on faculty with Ballet Arizona since 2022 and joined as a Principal Faculty in 2025, teaching company members, and students of the School of Ballet Arizona. Known for his passion and high standards, he inspires dancers to pursue both technical excellence and authentic artistry.
