Learn More About Dance for Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease affects nearly 10 million people worldwide, presenting challenges like stiffness, tremors, and balance issues. While there’s no cure, research shows that dance can significantly improve motor function, balance, and overall well-being for those living with Parkinson’s. At Ballet Arizona, we believe that ballet is for everyone, and our Dance for Parkinson’s program stands as a testament to how dance can transform lives.

Ballet Arizona’s Dance for Parkinson’s program is designed specifically for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. Inspired by the acclaimed Dance for PD® model developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group, the program combines the grace and precision of ballet with movements that improve coordination, flexibility, and strength.

This class is led by Debbie Braganza, who is trained in Parkinson’s-specific movement therapy, the classes focus on gentle warm-ups to improve joint mobility, balance exercises to enhance stability, musicality to engage the brain and creative expression to encourage emotional release. Classes are designed to be accessible to all levels, whether participants are seated or standing, everyone is encouraged to engage at their own pace. Care partners are also welcome to join.

Real Stories

Many participants have found more than just physical benefits; they have discovered renewed confidence and joy.

“Movement is medicine. Doubly so in my case, as the serious side-effects I’ve encountered from PD-targeted medications preclude me from taking them. This world-wide program, using trained dancers to guide us through movement tailored to PD, is essential to my health. It’s a joy to be a part of and accomplishes an enormous amount of good.”

“I start out always thinking about if I don’t make time for wellness; I will have to make time for illness later on. It all begins with being well. Ballet with our teacher and other Parkinson’s patients has really helped me a lot. It has helped me improve my cognition as I try to remember the steps; it helps me with balance, mobility, and flexibility. There is camaraderie as everyone is in the same boat. I always feel better at the end of class.”

“Rhythm is something that your muscle memory remembers, just like walking and physical movement and that’s what we tend to forget with Parkinson’s, we have that movement inside of us that is really muscle memory. Dance for PD brings that back to me. I am able to do more walking and have a better life because of it.”
