The Ballet Herald: Juan Gabriel Finally Premieres on the Phoenix Stage

After delays due to the pandemic, Phoenix audiences will finally be able to see the world premiere of Ib Andersen’s Juan Gabriel, a tribute to the Mexican singer and songwriter.

Specifically, the new ballet created for and danced by Ballet Arizona brings to life Gabriel’s acclaimed performance at the Palacio de Belles Artes, featuring music from the 1990 album of the same title. Andersen draws inspiration from the passion and style Gabriel exuded in every performance. Juan Gabriel incorporates the musician’s poetic lyrics and musical themes to bring a new appreciation to the emotional authenticity of this Mexico City-born legend.

Viewers of all ages will be moved by the story of Gabriel, who broke cultural and societal barriers, and can expect to feel love, sadness, and joy all in one great evening as Ballet Arizona pays tribute to a master.

Adding to the beauty of the music and choreography will be costumes masterfully designed by Mexico City-based designer and fashion house, Carla Fernández. Her designs pay homage to the indigenous and mestizo communities of Mexico, using sustainable textiles and cultural accuracy. Fernández’s designs are ethically crafted, handmade, and avant-garde.

The world premiere opens on May 5th at Symphony Hall and runs through May 8th.
