The Summer Intensive offers serious ballet students the highest caliber of intensive classical training, augmented by a rich diversity of dance forms necessary to meet the eclectic demands of dance companies today. Additionally, Ballet Arizona Studio Company members are selected from Summer Intensive.

The School of Ballet Arizona’s summer program offers six full weeks of intensive classes. Our program offers students ages 11+ the opportunity to make advances in technique and in the way they dance as they are taught by internationally renowned faculty from The Stuttgart Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Ballet de Camagüey of Cuba, The Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, The National Ballet of Canada and The Pennsylvania Ballet!

 

Our summer intensive gives students a feel for Phoenix living and what life is like within The School of Ballet Arizona family. Students will have classes five days a week. Courses offered are ballet technique, pointe, men’s technique, variations, repertory and Ballet Arizona’s repertory, men’s conditioning, dancer wellness, Pilates, flamenco, strength and conditioning, modern, Horton, jazz, and additional enriching subjects.

Guest Faculty

Françoise Thouveny-Doyle

Françoise Thouveny-Doyle is a native of France. She started her classical ballet training in her hometown of Orléans and in Paris at le Centre de Danse de Paris training with Nina Vyroubova, Yvonne Meyer, and Gilbert Mayer. She started her professional career with Roland Petit at the Ballet National de Marseille and moved to the United States to join The Washington Ballet under the artistic direction of Mary Day and Choo San Goh.

Ms. Thouveny-Doyle was a member of the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Oklahoma under the artistic direction of Edward Villella, and guest performed with Martine Van Hamel’s New Amsterdam Ballet and the National Ballet of Korea. She performed ballets from the classical repertoire as well as many contemporary works from choreographers such as George Balanchine, Anthony Tudor, John Cranko, Niles Christie, Edward Villella, Fernand Nault, Choo San Goh, and Roland Petit.

Following her dancing career, Ms. Thouveny-Doyle along with her husband Christopher Doyle co-directed the Fresno ballet school in California. During their tenure in California they developed and implemented a comprehensive ballet curriculum from beginner level to pre-professional. At the invitation of Rebecca Wright she joined the faculty of The Washington School of Ballet where she has been teaching in the lower and upper division, as well as the professional division. She has been a guest teacher with the National Ballet of Korea, the School of Ballet Arizona, and the English National Ballet School in London.

Ms. Thouveny-Doyle has extensive experience teaching and training young pre professional dancers and believes that through the study of classical ballet the student is provided with the confidence, focus and grace for success in years to come. Ms. Thouveny-Doyle joined the faculty at Maryland Youth Ballet in 2021.

Glenn Edgerton

Glenn Edgerton has had an international career as a dancer, teacher, and director. His sixteen-year dancing career was with The Joffrey Ballet and The Netherlands Dance Theater. At The Joffrey Ballet, he performed leading roles, classical and contemporary for 11 years under the mentorship of Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino. He danced principal roles in the classics of John Cranko and Sir Fredrick Ashton along with innovative choreographers like Twyla Tharp, Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Paul Taylor and Laura Dean.

In 1989, Edgerton joined the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), where he was immersed in the diverse repertory of master choreographers and emerging choreographers for five years. After retiring from performing, he became the executive artistic director of NDT 1, mentored by Jiří Kylián, leading the company for a decade and presenting the works of Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, William Forsythe, Ohad Naharin, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, Jorma Elo, Johan Inger, Paul Lightfoot and Sol León, among many others.

 

From 2006 to 2008, he directed the Colburn Dance Institute at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, CA while teaching at UCLA, Loyola Marymount, and CalArts. Edgerton joined Hubbard Street as associate artistic director in 2008. From 2009-2020 he served as Hubbard Street’s artistic director bringing the company to perform worldwide while fostering the next generation of dancers and choreographers. In 2017, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of the arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA. As of the fall of 2020 he joined the faculty at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma teaching ballet with an emphasis on the prolific repertory of Jiří Kylián and setting works by Gerald Arpino. Edgerton was invited by American Ballet Theater to teach company class and stage the work, Sinfonietta by Jiří Kylián in the fall of 2022. Glenn is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma.

Before the Audition
  • Audition fee is $40, payable in cash or check – card will not be accepted
  • Pre-registration is encouraged, but in-person registration is available up to half an hour before class starts.
  • Bring a headshot photo and a full body photo in the first arabesque (required)
  • Ladies auditioning for the Upper Division program should bring their pointe shoes

Attire and Hair:

Female students should wear a solid color leotard and tights and have their hair in a bun.
Male students should wear fitted bottoms or tights with a fitted T-shirt.
All students should have their hair neat and off of the face.

Video Auditions

Attire and Hair:

  • The video should be no longer than 10-15 minutes and include the following – Barre work, center work consisting of adagio, pirouettes, petite and grand allegro.

Women – Please include pointe work demonstrating an adagio, pirouettes en dehors and en dedans.

Men – Please include tours en l’air with 2 turning combinations

Students may register for consecutive 2, 4, or 6-week sessions.

Students will have classes five days a week. Housing is offered at ASU downtown for students interested in staying in a dorm, where meals will be provided. Additional fees apply.
